Charlie Gaul

March 03, 1974 - March 24, 2022

Charles Aristotle Gaul, "Charlie Gaul," died in his sleep on March 24, 2022, in San Francisco.  He was 48 years old.  Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he spent most of his childhood in New York City, which he continued to think of as “home.”  He moved to Seattle, Washington, with his family in 1988 and graduated from Garfield High School in 1992. Returning to New York City, he studied fine arts at Columbia University, earning a Bachelor’s in 1996.  To keep body and soul together, he worked in accounting in New York City before moving to San Francisco, where he continued in that calling.  He was a gifted conversationalist who could hold forth knowledgably on subjects ranging from architecture to home furnishings to food and wine.  Amongst those who knew and loved him, Charlie was probably most renowned for his wit — “one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met …”. He also had beautiful handwriting.  Charlie is survived by his father and stepmother, Jim and Chris Gaul of Seattle, Washington; by his mother and stepfather, Carole and Jim Rigney of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Funeral services will be private.  In lieu of flowers, please enjoy a glass of good wine in Charlie’s honor.

Condolences 1

CeeJay Smith I remember Charlie coming to Saint Benedict's Prep with his dad and "sitting in" during our English class. He was a nice quiet/shy kid around us that probably thought that us teenagers were all crazy. Super sad that, although many of us (students and faculty) have been looking for his dad for a few years... I have found this tragic piece of information instead. I extend much belated condolences to Charlie's family. Respectfully I Remain, J o h n. S t e e b e r PS: I am not sure how to get in touch with the family at this point. I will pass this along on the "You Know You're From St. Benedict's Prep When" Facebook group. Again, my condolences to all that knew Charlie. 😥
